‘Lumpy’ (pictured below) was one of last years commission pieces and his new owner has kindly allowed us to use him here as a reference. His life started when the customer approached the Knottwood team asking if it was possible to create a gargoyle figure with an amusing expression for a birthday present.

We said ‘Yes, no problem!’ and went to work.
Lumpy was first modeled in clay by highly trained knottwood monkeys, (a photo was sent to the client at this stage in case changes were needed) he was then coated in many layers of liquid latex to form a flexible mould.
The mould was then removed from the clay original and the clay recycled.
We then cast lumpy by pouring high grade gypsum plaster into the latex mould. (Gypsum was the material of choice for this project as it is inexpensive and fairly light when dry which helps to keep postage costs to a minimum).
He was then removed from the mould, sanded to bring out the detail and remove any imperfections, painted and sealed (by hand of course) with a tough polyurethane varnish to prevent damage and protect from weather should he be wanted for garden use.
The final stage touch was a felt layer on the bottom to prevent him scratching furniture and he was packaged and shipped to off to a happy customer.

This page will be updated with other previous knottwood commissions as soon as we have a spare moment.
